Part 3

Object of their affection, yeah that's true!

Ah I like your idea of Marty repairing Rust's taillight, that'll be very natural for Marty , he'll do everything to make up for his regret: ) and please do the fic of that ! I'm very expecting.

Thank you for reminding me of the song that I never noticed before! "she used to have style and she used it. and they say it turned bad when the truth came 'round and she refused it. " it truly is a crumbling, when Maggie lets the grudge overwhelm and ruin part of herself too. I don't think Maggie never regrets for what she has done to Rust, but as you said, she's a egocentric person so she can move on with the regret, which is quite different from Rust. ( I don't want to think much about that because it will stir up my fury again) Actually I think Maggie isn't a successfully written character, so hollow and simplified, just like Laurie.

Oh yes I've thought of Marty's attitude to homosexuality too. Consider his upbringing and environment, he should have homophobic problems, but I don't find much of that in the show. (Oh Rust calls Geraci "cocksucker "? I should rewatch it ) Homophobia is quite common among the guys then, but I think Marty may have a paradoxical attitude to it. (It may bring out an interesting probe into Marty's morality and sexuality. ) He takes Rust's tease easily , so we can imagine Marty has considered the question when Rust is still in coma. At least he makes his decision to consolidate his bonds with Rust (and even go some further ).

And I'm always wondering what's Rust's thought about this ( his own sexuality, and what does he feel about Marty, that'll be another subject ... )

The car scene in ep8 is quite crucial to develope their relationships, I think. Now they can talk about it peacefully. I'm glad it's Marty who starts it (he must have prepared for it beforehand) and obviously means to make a reconciliation - he really needs Rust's explanation of that event, though he still minds if Rust really WANTS it.( I think what upsets him most is Rust's attitude - if Rust really wants Maggie then or not.) After that, they are smoothly back into the old pattern of banters.( Marty even asks the words "sentient meat "which he probably would only have sniffed at before ; )

Oh yes! I think Marty always needs someone to push him, in 2012,he may intentionally give Rust some hint and Rust'll be surprised when Marty taking it easily

I like your opinion that Marty realizes what he really needs when holding Rust in Carcosa! He finds his real self, like Rust does. I think Carcosa is a revealiation for both of them, the answer of the question they keeps seeking. and I also like you said Marty has outgrown his boyish insecurity.

What's interesting is, no matter how Marty thought he was different from Rust before, now they are quite in the same way. Only when Marty loses all he has and leaves what was imposed on him( by his parents, or others, or the surroundings ) is he able to get mature. Rust understands him of that, and he accepts Marty into his own space.

haha yes ! the scene is so interesting !and Rust is really taking attention to Marty 's reactions all the time. I think in every interrogation they both keep in a silent interaction by eyes contact and little gestures.

and poor Charlie Lang

I still so impressed by how naturally Woody brings humors in so many scenes. It's so interesting that, in a show with Matthew McConaughey it's Woody makes it into a romcom in the end (no )

I don't remember seeing this in the show ?that Marty dancing with Maggie in the double date. now I suspect that all the date scene is an embellished memory of Marty - Rust is smiling and Laurie taking his hand, he and Maggie laughing - it seems so unreal

the fucking ribbon ! Yes I never realized it before it's Marty who tied the ribbon on the box . I think you're right that Marty is not likely to keep an old box( I think after divorce he will eliminate all the memories about Maggie - even her photos ), but imagine the possibility is interesting - Marty, a sappy fool who's always good at giving gifts , searches in his old stuff and finally find the old box (?), then puts the cigarette in it and ties the ribbon on it. Oh my, just think what is he thinking when doing this - it must remind him of his first wedding, no matter it's his old box or not If he bought the box especially for Rust, why he chooses the particular packaging?... And when he's handing the gift to Rust, he's intentionally avoiding the eyes contact, almost like a schoolboy awkwardly paying his addresses to the girl he's fond of (as my friend said )

Oh I like your interpretation of it ! that's so true that they are both like a mirror to reflect the other's soul, and will bring out their better selves. unlike the witch's magic mirror, of course

oh, that's contrary to the "good "mirror I said, magic mirror is bad for people, it only reflects their distorted illusions. I think maybe most people beside Marty are magic mirror for him.

another point in the car scene in ep8, when Rust says "I sure blame you "and Marty says "blamed me ?" he doesn't seem being offended but even amused. I think he's reassured Rust only concerns about what's between THEM and it's nothing about Maggie.

yes I can't agree more ! I love the atmosphere here - they find back the intimacy naturally, it's all about "you" and "me", no one else.

Rust is the same(" I think I'd better not to mention her name "). They come to a silent understanding that neither of them wants to involve Maggie in again. And yes ! Rust is some nervous at Marty's flirting and Marty smirks like he has won the game

I like your interpretation that Rust is testing Marty...there's so much subtle emotions untold in their interaction. In fact they're both testing each other, cautiously trying the right steps in their changed relationship. Because what they' deal with now is a more complicated relationship (than the simple partnership before ).
