真探聊天记录 (part 1)

记录一下前一阵和汤上一位网友用英语聊真探的记录(我本人的部分),几个月累积下来篇幅也很可观了~

Part 1

My headcanon after the season - Rust and Marty are partners of Marty's agency, they live together and share a bed, with a steady (romantic) relationship. But I think they won't step into marriage for a long time , because neither of them cares much about the form anymore.
I think Rust will have a haircut and shave his mustache,  and Marty will lose some weight but  still have a soft belly( and Rust likes it  Sometimes he will drag Marty out for jogging in the morning : )
In my fics they go to Alaska several times, for vacation and work. Rust brings Marty to his father's cabin and teaches him hunting in mountain. (I'm a fan of Alaska and love to imagine their adventures in the wild ; )

The scene Rust asks Marty's personal life is so subtle and meaningful , and Marty's response - so surprised and happy . and the bride's path ? oh I never link this with the 'proposal ', but it quite make sense ! and yes the present - I believe Marty is always gallant when he wants someone - but unlike the affairs before, he really cares about Rust.
and I also love to imagine they live together in a house with a garden: )
I have another feeling that Rust, even in his aloof manners to everyone, has a strong need of careness and affection from a close one. and Marty is always longing for physical touches .So after Carcosa when they live together and loose their self restraint, they may end in sticking together all the day.

I love the scene they talking about Geraci too ! Marty is definitely flirting and Rust almost seems jealous ; )
And the same , I'd like to talk much about the subtle balance between Rust and Marty, and Marty's family. (I'm expecting more of your opinion on this subject ! ) I agree that in the show Laurie as a character is so flimsy as a piece of paper that the whole relationship between she and Rust feels quite untrue. Actually I've written something about it in my fic, that Marty suggests Maggie to introduce a doctor to Rust, because he thinks she'll  benefits Rust ('s addiction problems ). And Rust agrees with him because he wants to have a try to fit himself into normal society. I think Laurie's feeling of Rust is a combination of sympathy and admiration. (I noticed in a deleted scene of Rust and Laurie's quarrel, there's a clipping of newspaper of the Ledoux's case on the wall, saying "heroes saved children "or something. So I have a feeling Rust wouldn't stand Laurie looking him as a hero - he can't accept a relationship based on illusion.) Laurie wishes to "cure" Rust and make him her ideal husband, but finally she realizes Rust is not the man she'd imagined, and he doesn't trust her in everything.
(In fact, I think Marty and Maggie have the same problem. When Rust breaks up with Laurie, Maggie comes to realize something may never be repaired, all her efforts to remedy her marriage would be in vain. )
Rust and Marty know each other better than anyone else, even their (Marty's)family. They always show their truest part to each other, that's the foundation of their relationship.
I also love your opinion that there could be something lying underneath between them, and Rust may feel it first. "They slipped briskly into an intimacy from which they never recovered." oh this is so beautiful and precise ! Perhaps neither of them realize the meaning of each other in their police period, but I believe they can't leave the concerns aside, even dream of each other in the separate years.

Yes I agree with your opinions about Rust and Marty's family.
1)
It hits me the first time that Marty DOESN'T really want to have Rust as a part of his family. My feeling is, Marty is always keeping his life running in some separated parts , Rust and the job (and the girlfriends )in one side, while Maggie and girls in other side. He wants to keep his privacies in both the separated worlds, that provides him personal space and freedom in some way. When he permits Rust into his family, he just means occasionally inviting Rust to dinners with Maggie and girls. But he doesn't want his different worlds interfering with each other and out of his control.
2)
I feel the same that Marty and Maggie are never "right " . They're wrong matched from the beginning. Marty never knows what he wants so he never feels content in the marriage. I think Marty is seeking for a traditional dream housewife in Maggie, to protect him and support him all the time, more of his mother's role than his wife. But that's not the mate he really needs. (I'd like to talk much about Marty and Maggie's relationship but it'll digress. Maybe we can discuss it later : )

When Rust comes mowing Marty's lawn, he just freaks out,  because aside from his excessive territory consciousness and jealousy, he feels the threat to his safety and balance, from Rust, an unstable and uncontrollable element. But paradoxically, Marty still instinctively feels the attraction from Rust. As you said, they are naturally compatible with each other, no matter in a romantic way or not, but Marty wasn't aware of it then.
( I think Marty may also have an unconscious possession for Rust - he enjoys the fact that he's the only friend of Rust. But he doesn't like to see Rust share his friendship with Maggie. )
Sorry I only remember seeing the deleted scene on YouTube, but didn't keep the link. Actually, I hate Maggie dragging Rust to the matching dates and trying to make him into what they want. ( I remember a post on tumblr saying Maggie used to introduce Jenny to Steve Geraci, an obvious mismatch ) Maybe I'm always severe to her but It gives me a feeling that Maggie often looks her friends as tools to benefit her family.
And the synesthesia thing, poor Rust is so awkward and nervous in such a scene , when he dancing with Jenny he's almost like having a bomb in his arms. It's quite contrary to his manner with Marty. and yes, Marty is obviously accustomed to the "weirdness" of his partner -  It's always cute to see them in a tacit understanding.

Yes I agree with all of your opinions ! As for Marty and Maggie, my headcanon is they meet in college and get married shortly after graduating. Maggie is obviously from higher class so her parents disapprove her get along with Marty, but they still go into marriage. ( Mostly from impulsion and rebellion, I even doubt they marry nastily because Maggie is pregnant ) They have passion in early years, but problems arise and neither of them admit them. Actually, I think Marty always has a compatible problem with his wife - I think in their family Maggie is stronger and dominant and Marty instinctively puts her in his mother's role, that brings him much pressure. I even suspect in their last years Marty may have impotent problem with Maggie (so they may have been sleeping separately for years), partly dues to his sense of guilt and inferiority for her after his first affair.  He has so much desire repressed and he can't get content from Maggie. That aggravates the gap in their marriage.
As for Maggie, she just can't accept her failure and believes she can change her husband and remedy her marriage. She tries hard to save her family, but her hope fades away as time goes by and Marty gives her last strike in the end.

And yes, Laurie is nothing but a plot device, (tbh I'm quite glad Rust rejects her flatly ) I wonder how Maggie (or Marty )coaxes Rust into dating. (in my fic, once Rust gets so fucked up and almost overdozed in a motel, Marty takes him back and takes care of him for days , they both agree Rust can't going on like that, so Marty advises to introduce a doctor to Rust. )
And their double date scene seems so unreal,  the way Marty and Rust exchange  glances is almost like they have secrets - which dividing the four into two separate parts - men and women. And the weird newspaper !  yes I never thought of its source before, but I guess Marty keeps it in his home and Laurie may get it from Maggie.
I really love the way they touch each other ! Mostly Rust to Marty actually. When Rust is in Crash's mode he's even more handsy ~that's so interesting for such an unsociable person like Rust.  Rust's touch is quite effective to soothe Marty and cool him down.
And I love your interpretation of Marty's words - Rust is weighing the same as his family, he realizes it more and more after divorce.
